or assessment/waiver. Major issues and social problems related
to women through an interdisciplinary analysis of social
institutions and movements for social change as they affect women.
Focus is on 21st century trends in institutions such as the family,
law, medicine, education and other social interaction. 3 lecture

Substance
Abuse -- Prerequisites: “C” or better in
ENG 025, ENG 032 or assessment/waiver. Provides basic
information about alcohol and drugs and the laws that pertain to
their abuse. Explores current attitudes and practices that pertain
to alcohol and drug use, misuse and dependence. Class can be used
toward ICAADA certification. 3 lecture hours. |

Internship I -- Prerequisites:
HMS 101, HMS 102, HMS 103. The first of two fieldwork
experiences in approved human service agencies. The student will
complete 160 hours under the supervision of an agency professional
and a college faculty member. The classroom component will include
small group discussion and analysis of the internship experience. 2
lecture hours; 10 co-op/practicum hours.

dynamics, issues and behaviors. Includes group functioning and

supervisor. Discusses social policy and its impact on human
services. 3 lecture hours. |

-- Prerequisites: None. Provides an overview of the
concepts, definitions and measurements of juvenile delinquency.
Explores various theories that attempt to explain the causes of
delinquency. Looks at the role of environmental influences [peers,
gangs, school, drugs, etc.] as they contribute to delinquency.
Discusses an overview of the history and philosophy of the juvenile
justice system as well as ways to control and treat juvenile
delinquents. 3 lecture hours. |

Issues and Ethics in Human
Services -- Prerequisites: HMS 101, HMS 102, HMS
103. Advanced level course provides an overview of legal and
ethical aspects in the field of human services with implications
for the human service worker. Includes topics such as
confidentiality, rights of clients, client records, equal
protection for staff and clients, and discrimination. The Human
Service Ethical Code and related codes are covered with an overview
of ethical dimensions of practice. 3 lecture hours. |

Rehabilitation
Processes: Probation and Parole -- Prerequisites: HMS
101 or HMS 105. Provides an understanding of probation and
parole as an integral part of the criminal justice system with
special emphasis on current and future trends in this area.
Explores the role of community corrections and its impact on the
role of probation and parole in our society in view of the increase
in the number of offenders. 3 lecture hours.
