MEA 102 First Aid and CPR -- Prerequisites: "C" or better in ENG 025, ENG 032, or assessment/waiver. Provides students with information necessary to recognize emergency situations, know the proper course of action with different types of emergencies, and apply appropriate first aid including CPR. 1 lecture hour; 2 lab hours.

MEA 105 Office Administration with Computer Applications -- Prerequisites: “C” or better in ENG 025, ENG 032, or assessment/waiver and basic computer keyboard skills or OAD 019. Provides a basic understanding of the administrative duties and responsibilities pertinent to medical offices. Includes instruction in medical correspondence and records, case histories of patients, filing, telephone procedures, appointment scheduling, receptionist duties and processing mail. Familiarizes the student with computer applications in the health care setting. Provides the student with basics of operations and application of computer usage within the health care provider office. Includes simulated data entry for patient records, appointment scheduling and day sheet transactions. 2 lecture hours; 2 lab hours.

MEA 106 Medical Financial Management with Computer Applications -- Prerequisites: "C" or better in ENG 025, ENG 032, MAT 044 or assessment/waiver. Provides instruction in medical office financial administration, bookkeeping and materials management. 3 lecture hours.

MEA 135 Medical Word Processing and Transcription -- Prerequisites: HHS 101, OAD 019. Develops skills and knowledge of medical dictation, machine transcription and use of word processors and typewriters. Includes typing and transcription of medical reports, terminology and correspondence. 3 lecture hours.

MEA 137 Medical Insurance and Basic Coding with Computer Applications -- Prerequisite: HHS 101. Provides an overview of medical insurance programs and the skills needed in handling insurance forms, CPT and ICD-9-CM Coding and insurance reports as applied to the medical office. Includes simulated computer data entry for patient records, procedure and diagnostic codes, insurance processing and electronic transmission of claims. 2 lecture hours; 2 lab hours.

MEA 205 Introduction to Electrocardiography -- Prerequisites: ANP 102, HHS 101. Presents the rationale for obtaining an electrocardiogram as well as related theory including anatomy and physiology, procedural technique and equipment utilized. Introduces the students to basic rhythm analysis including recognizing standard electrical waves and accurate measuring of each ECG complex to determine heart rate and rhythm. Reviews characteristics of normal sinus rhythm and basic arrhythmias. 2 lecture hours, 3 lab hours.

MEA 212 Phlebotomy -- Prerequisite: HHS 101. Presents the principles and practices of laboratory specimen collection and processing. Also covers medical terminology, infection control, patient identification, anatomy and physiology, anticoagulants, blood collection, specimen processing and interpersonal skills. 2 lecture hours; 2 lab hours.

MEA 213 Advanced Insurance Coding -- Prerequisite: MEA 137. Introduces the medical office administrator to codes necessary to bill insurance claims and provides experience in coding claim forms using the correct combination of codes to maximize reimbursement. 3 lecture hours.

MEA 215 Advanced Medical Terminology -- Prerequisite: HHS 101. Includes more detailed and advanced study of the derivatives of medical terms, symbols, and signs. Presents an in-depth study of the correlation between medical vocabulary and the application of those terms to the anatomy and physiology of the body, related diseases, conditions and treatment. 3 lecture hours.

MEA 218 Pharmacology -- Prerequisites: MAT 050 or assessment/waiver, ANP 101, HHS 101, or MEA program chair approval. Corequesites: ANP 102. Discusses the most common medications in current use with emphasis on classifications, uses, routes of administration, dosages, interactions, incompatibilities and side effects. Emphasizes the 50 most commonly prescribed drugs listed in Pharmacy Times. Addresses special precautions, legal aspects, patient education, and preparation and administration of medications. 3 lecture hours.

MEA 219 Medical Assisting Laboratory Techniques -- Prerequisites: ANP 102, HHS 101 or MEA program chair approval. Prepares student to perform various basic laboratory procedures including preparation of patients, collecting and preparing appropriate specimens and expected norms of laboratory test results. Includes current safety and quality control standards. 1 lecture hour; 4 lab hours.

MEA 227 Medical Office Management -- Prerequisites: MEA 105, MEA 106, MEA 135, MEA 137. Provides an in-depth study of various influences on office functions concerning organization and management of a physician's office. Includes government and professional sources for consultation. 3 lecture hours.

MEA 235 Advanced Transcription -- Prerequisites: MEA 135. Improves accuracy and speed of the medical transcriptionist utilizing various formats for medical transcription. 3 lecture hours.

MEA 238 Clinical I -- Prerequisites: HHS 101, currently CPR trained [Professional CPR/AED level] and MEA program chair approval. Presents theory and lab related to clinical aspects of the medical office. Provides students with information necessary to recognize emergencies, know the proper course of action with different types of emergencies and apply appropriate first aid. Allows students to become familiar with clinical duties and to gain the skills needed to perform them. Includes vital signs, asepsis, sterilization, nutrition and treatment room procedures. 2 lecture hours; 2 lab hours.

MEA 239 Clinical II -- Pre/Corequisites: MEA 238. Presents a continuation of clinical skills and theory and allows the student to become familiar with the following clinical duties: medications, EKGs, X-ray, physical therapy, respiratory testing and other technical skills needed to assist the physician. 2 lecture hours; 2 lab hours.

MEA 242 Disease Conditions -- Prerequisites: ANP 102, HHS 101, or MEA program chair approval. Presents the basic concepts of diseases, their course, and functional disturbances as they relate to body systems. Includes the precipitating risk factors and appropriate methods of patient education regarding various disease processes. 3 lecture hours.

MEA 257 Phlebotomy Externship -- Prerequisites: MEA 212, MEA program chair approval. Provides the opportunity to discuss and perform phlebotomy procedures under supervision with learning experiences obtained in selected laboratories, physicians' offices, clinics or hospitals. 1.5 lecture hours; 7.5 lab hours.

MEA 258 Medical Assisting Clinical Externship -- Prerequisites: MEA program chair approval. Provides opportunities to observe, perform and discuss various clinical competencies under supervision, with learning experiences obtained in selected physician's offices, clinics or hospitals. Reviews the following basic principles of psychology as they apply to the medical assistant: developmental stages of the life cycle; hereditary, cultural and environmental influences on behavior; mental health; and applied psychology. 1.5 lecture hour; 7.5 lab hours.

MEA 259 Medical Assisting Administrative Externship -- Prerequisites: MEA program chair approval. Provides opportunities to observe, perform and discuss various administrative competencies under supervision, with learning experiences obtained in selected physicians' offices, clinics or hospitals. 1.5 lecture hour; 7.5 lab hours.

MEA 284 Special Topics in Medical Assistant -- Prerequisites: MEA program chair approval. Provides students with the opportunity to experience seminars, workshops and other instructional activities on topics of interest that reinforce the concepts presented in their program area.
