SUR 111 Fundamentals of Surgical Technology -- Prerequisites: Admission to clinical phase of surgical technology program, ANP 101, MAT 111, ENG 111, HHS 101. Corequisite: SUR 112. Introduces principles of sterile techniques and the operative care of the surgical patient. Includes the roles of scrubbing and circulating duties. 4 lecture hours.

SUR 112 Application of Surgical Fundamentals -- Prerequisites: Admission to clinical phase of surgical technology program, ANP 101, MAT 111, ENG 111, HHS 101. Corequisite: SUR 111. Demonstrates the application of surgical fundamentals. Correlates theory to practice by requiring students to participate as members of a surgical team in laboratory simulations. 4 lab hours.

SUR 113 Surgical Procedures I -- Prerequisites: ANP 102, HHS 105, BIO 211, SUR 111, SUR 112, SUR 201. Corequisite: SUR 114. Introduces general surgical procedures with review of perioperative patient care including diagnostic testing, preoperative care and immediate postoperative care. 3 lecture hours.

SUR 114 Clinical Applications I -- Prerequisites: ANP 102, HHS 105, BIO 211, SUR 111, SUR 112, SUR 201. Corequisite: SUR 113. Correlates the principles and theories of basic surgical procedures to clinical performance in affiliating hospitals. Includes knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for successful implementation of safe patient care in an operating room. 9 clinical hours.

SUR 201 Pharmacology -- Prerequisites: "C" or better in MAT 050 or assessment/waiver, HHS 101. Corequisite: ANP 102. Introduces the basic concepts of pharmacology. Emphasis is given to classification, indications, interactions and adverse reactions of commonly used medications. Dosage calculation, weights and measures, terminology and abbreviations associated with drug use are presented. Medication use in the perioperative patient is addressed. 3 lecture hours.

SUR 211 Surgical Procedures II -- Prerequisites: COM 101 or COM 102, Humanities/Social Sciences elective, SUR 113, SUR 114. Corequisite: SUR 212. Studies advanced surgical procedures in relation to the physiological aspects of surgical intervention including those procedures related to the special senses, genitourinary, reproductive, musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Includes knowledge of the involved anatomy, existing pathology, surgical hazards encountered, the surgical procedure and a review of perioperative patient care. 6 lecture hours.

SUR 212 Clinical Applications II -- Prerequisites: COM 101 or COM 102, Humanities/Social Sciences elective, SUR 113, SUR 114. Corequisite: SUR 211. Correlates the basic principles and theories of advanced surgical procedures to clinical performance in affiliating hospitals. Includes knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for successful implementation of safe patient care in an operating room. 27 clinical hours.

SUR 213 Surgical Procedures III -- Prerequisites: SUR 211, SUR 212. Corequisite: SUR 214. Studies specialized surgical procedures including those related to aesthetic and reconstructive surgery and the cardiothoracic and vascular systems. Includes knowledge of the involved anatomy, existing pathology, surgical hazards encountered, the surgical procedure and a review of perioperative patient care. 3 lecture hours.

SUR 214 Clinical Applications III -- Prerequisites: SUR 211, SUR 212. Corequisite: SUR 213. Correlates principles and theories of specialized surgical procedures to the clinical performance in affiliating hospitals. Includes the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for successful implementation of safe patient care in an operating room. 33.5 clinical hours.

SUR 284 Special Topics in Surgical Technology -- Prerequisite: SUR program chair approval. Provides students with the opportunity to experience seminars, workshops and other instructional activities on topics of interest that reinforce the concepts presented in their program areas.
