Vocational Rehabilitation [VR] provides services to
people with disabilities. The program utilizes State and Federal
resources to help persons with disabilities find employment and
achieve greater independence in daily life.
Eligibility requirements
- The applicant must have a physical or mental impairment;
- The impairment must substantially interfere with the ability of
the individual to work;
- Vocational rehabilitation services must be required for the
individual to prepare for, enter, engage in, or retain gainful
employment
An application for services may be taken at a case conference,
or if more appropriate, at some time after the conference. If
arrangements are not made at the conference, the student or parents
should contact the counselor and ask to schedule an application
appointment. Parents or guardians need to be present in the case of
minors or legal guardianship. During the application appointment,
the counselor will explain eligibility determination and services
available.
Determining eligibility
Determining eligibility for services requires exploration and
documentation of the disability. Existing records and reports will
be used as much as possible, but additional diagnostic evaluations
may be necessary. Such evaluations might include general medical
examination, specialist examination, psychological examination, and
work evaluation. If a work evaluation is necessary, it would be
scheduled through VR and would provide information on
vocational-related strengths and weaknesses, work behavior,
vocational aptitude, and interests.
